Letterpress Printing
Zazzle's letterpress flat cards are pressed into thick 100% cotton stock and available in styles spanning elegant calligraphy and flowing script for weddings, clean black and white minimalism, botanical wildflower and eucalyptus motifs, photo-forward graduation layouts, and seasonal holiday designs. Choose classic ink colors or skip the ink entirely with a blind deboss that presses your design straight into the paper.
Letterpress is the kind of detail people notice the moment they run a finger across it. Where flat printing sits on the surface, letterpress sinks into the cotton, leaving a soft impression that catches the light and the touch. It is the difference between a card someone glances at and one they keep on the mantel, a small piece of craft that makes a date, a name, or a milestone feel genuinely worth marking.
What is letterpress?
Letterpress is a relief printing technique in which ink is spread onto a raised plate and the paper is pressed into it, depositing the ink directly into the paper's fibers while simultaneously leaving a slight depression where the plate made contact. The result is a design you can both see and feel, which is the defining characteristic that sets letterpress apart from flat printing methods.
What can I use letterpress for?
Letterpress printing adds tactile elegance to any paper product, from formal invitations to seasonal cards. Here are some of the most popular uses:
- Weddings: Set the tone for your special day with custom letterpress stationery like RSVP Cards and Enclosure Cards
- Christmas Cards: Letterpress holiday cards feel more personal than standard printed cards. Choose a classic design or customize with your family name, photo, or message.
- Quinceañera: Letterpress quinceañera invitations bring the formality and beauty this milestone deserves. Customize the wording, colors, and design to reflect your style.
Is letterpress printing expensive?
Letterpress printing costs more than standard digital printing because it requires custom etched plates, specialized equipment, and thick cotton paper capable of holding a deep impression. The quality difference is visible and tactile from the moment you hold a finished card.
Zazzle's letterpress stationery is priced to reflect the artisan process while remaining accessible for real budgets. You choose your paper weight: 20pt cotton for a classic, elevated feel, or 40pt premium cotton for an ultra-deep, pillowy impression. You control where the investment goes. Envelopes are included with every order.
What are the disadvantages of letterpress printing?
Letterpress is a premium process, but there are a few tradeoffs. Here's what to know before choosing it:
- Limited color range: Letterpress works best with one or two ink colors per design. Each color requires a separate plate, so multi-color designs add complexity and cost.
- Slight design variance: Letterpress uses multiple plates pressed in a sequence, so colors may shift slightly between prints. This is a natural part of the process, and part of what gives letterpress its handcrafted feeling. If your design relies on precise color-to-color alignment, digital printing will give you a cleaner result.
- Higher cost: The artisan setup, custom plates, and premium cotton paper all contribute to a higher price per piece than regular digital printing.
For wedding stationery and luxury cards where the tactile impression is the point, these trade-offs are generally worth it. For photo-based or highly detailed full-color designs, we offer combination letterpress + CMYK photo cards so you can experience the best of both worlds.
What type of paper is best for letterpress?
Cotton paper is the gold standard for letterpress printing. Its natural fibers compress evenly under pressure, allowing the plate to deposit ink deep into the paper while leaving a clean, distinct impression: the characteristic indent that makes letterpress feel as good as it looks.
Zazzle's letterpress stationery is available on two cotton paper options:
- 20pt cotton: A thick, premium cotton stock that delivers a classic, high-end letterpress impression. The right choice for a refined, elegant look.
- 40pt double-thick cotton: Nearly twice the weight of standard letterpress paper, this option produces an ultra-deep, pillowy impression that's immediately noticeable to the touch - the most luxurious letterpress experience available.
As a general rule: the heavier the paper, the more dramatic the impression. For wedding invitations where first impressions matter, the 40pt cotton is hard to beat.
How does letterpress compare to digital printing?
The core difference is both tactile and technical: letterpress presses ink directly into the paper's fibers using a physical plate, creating an impression you can feel; digital printing deposits ink on top of the paper surface, producing a flat, smooth result.
Letterpress printing
A custom etched plate is coated in ink and pressed into thick cotton paper under firm pressure, depositing the ink into the paper's fibers and leaving a slight debossed impression where the plate made contact. Limited to one or two ink colors per design. Produces a sensory experience that signals craftsmanship and intention. Higher cost, requires premium cotton paper, best for clean and elegant designs without photography or gradients.
Digital printing
Ink is applied directly to the paper surface using digital files, with no physical impression. Supports unlimited colors, full-color photography, and complex gradients. Lower cost, faster production, available on a wider range of paper stocks. Visually rich but flat to the touch.
For wedding invitations, save the dates, and luxury stationery where the physical feel matters as much as the look, letterpress is the premium choice. For photo-based designs or anything requiring many colors, digital printing delivers superior results.
